As a 20-plus year employee, nay, practically a family member of CHN, Admissions/Medical Case Manager Angela Keady’s deep passion for her work and our organization’s cause shines through in everything she does.
Originally hailing from Chicago, Illinois, Angela moved to Colorado in 1995 and has loved it here ever since. The mantra that Angela lives by is one from The Dalai Lama “If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.”
This resonates with her because “If I don’t have compassion for myself, I don’t have it for others.” Given our current state of things in contemporary society, she finds that is most important to put yourself in someone else’s shoes---to see or try to understand what is going on in their lives and struggles.
When not at CHN, Angela is happiest playing music (She’s currently learning how to play the ukulele and knows how to play the piano!) or playing with her kitty, Kedi, who despite her rough start, is actually starting to enjoy being a kitten again. One of Angela’s favorite types of music is Gypsy Jazz; which makes her feel like she’s been transported to another country or time period.
Movies that have a theme of resiliency about the human spirit speak to her---in particular, the 1991 film The Fisher King. That ongoing theme of overcoming challenges is even seen in her favorite choice of book, “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn”.
Working at CHN since 1996, it is obviously telling about what drew Angela to CHN. “The silence and stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS and two people I cared for deeply for is what drew me to this work.
I love coming to work each day because it’s an opportunity to support my clients and advocate for them on their terms. My clients’ strength and resilience in the face of poverty and stigma astounds me daily!”
What started as working at CHN and as a massage therapist for her side-project Center for Advanced Therapeutics (CAT) has blossomed into a pivotal role in helping people who come through our doors needing assistance.
It has been simultaneously heart-warming to see clients start from a dark place and grow into a more positive place in their lives; but also challenging and even heart-breaking to see clients start off on a high note and then decline. However, she finds it vital to start with clients where they are today.
